Meet Horses Where They’re At – Lessons from a Rescue Herd

Let me tell you a story.

Two weeks ago, a horse bit me in the face.
Just above my right eye.
In 30 years of working with horses, I’ve never experienced that. It shook me. But it also woke something up in me.
A Deeper Message
That horse — a rescue, full of trauma and history — wasn’t acting out randomly. He was responding to something. My energy. My presence. Or lack of it.
Fast forward to this past weekend.
I went back to see him. Same horse. Same body. But a completely different interaction.
He looked at me… ears forward… eyes soft. No tension. No threat.
Just stillness.
And in that moment, I felt it:
💡 “Horses meet us where we’re at. Not where we pretend to be. Not where we want to be. Exactly where we are.”
What This Horse Taught Me
When I treat horses, I don’t just work on muscle or fascia.
I observe. I watch the owner. I listen to the space between words. I watch how the horse shifts as I approach — how they exhale, blink, or step back.
It’s a conversation between nervous systems. Between breath.
Between intention and attention.
And when I stop trying to “fix”… and just be with them?
That’s when the healing begins.
Why This Matters for You
If you’re a rider who’s feeling frustrated… stuck… disconnected from your horse…Don’t force it.
Take a moment. Ask yourself: “Where am I right now?” Not just physically — but emotionally, mentally, energetically.
Then approach your horse from that place. With honesty. With softness. With presence.
You’ll be amazed what opens up.
Let’s Honour the Unspoken
This post is a tribute to that rescue horse. And every horse that’s ever reflected something back to us that we needed to see.
🫶 If your horse has ever taught you a lesson beyond words — drop it in the comments. Let’s honour the silent teachers who change us forever.
